MacPOET, in my experience, was very very buggy and a royal pain in the donkey. I had to put up with it for a few weeks while shopping for a router. I believe the general rule of thumb is to bypass it right from the beginning. Unfortunately I didn't have a router ready to connect when the DSL package arrived.
