Umax Value... hmmm..
I think that if the UMAX s900 is your main machine,
then its value is at least $535.00 (mac mini w/tax),
since getting another machine, which should always be
an upgrade, will cost at least that much.
Let's say you can get your hands on a base OEM s900.
The cost of that s900 to get it to run OSX would be:
165.00 -- for a new cpu. G3/500 minimun. sold in
stores
144.00 -- 1Gig memory max. that's why we buy the s900
80.00 -- ATA driver controllers. Scsi drives are dead
15.00 -- USB card. you'll need usb
30.00 -- Firewire card. optional
50.00 -- small ATA harddrive. more $$ for bigger.
----------
324
150 -- estimate for all the shipping and tax
----------
475 total.
AND THIS DOESN'T EVEN GET YOU A CD/DVD-/+ DRIVE.
so what are you buying? well, usb, firewire, ata
drives and controller that are all standard in new
macs. you'll basically be spending nearly 500.00 just
to stay in step. prices can be lowered by ebay of
course.
but, the bus is slower, the ram is older technology,
the cpu speed which i think is maxed at 800mhz for
s900 is much slower. the standard CD-Rom is 8x (i
think) but livable. u'll have to tinker to get OSX
installed and you can't even burn CDs at this point
without a new CD drive.
so if you want to sell that s900, its value in my mind
should not exceed $40.00 for a NEW base OEM machine.
however, i'll even say you need to go lower to the $20
range since you're paying/selling for an older, worn
and torn, harder to support machine.
535 (mac mini)
- 475 (upgrade costs)
- 20 (shipping)
-------------
$40.00
- 50% (for an aged machine)
-------------
$20.00
AND THIS DOESN'T EVEN GET YOU A CD/DVD-/+ DRIVE. If
you do add one, it'll be at least 100.00 and you're at
a loss already. Wow.
HOWEVER, if you're like me and you have a maxed out
s900 that has Floppy, ZIP, IDE, SCSI, ADB, USB,
Firewire with a ton load of ram, I would think its
value would be at least $1000. It would cost more to
get a replacement, but i'd subtract the cost of all
the older parts. And getting a new usb 9x12 tablet
runs in the hundreds and that's a cost that hasn't
been factored in for me.
