I'm sitting here with my S900 drooling over the G5/dual processors. I've upgraded my s900 slowly over several years till it has a gig of ram, a G4/450, and 80gig drive, and a 250 gig drive. I have been doing a good bit of video, and I just don't think the Mac Mini would get the job done. Even the more expensive model only comes with an 80 gig drive, and that just isn't enough. I'd love to have a G5/dual, but for the cost it is just better for me to let the old S900 render overnight. If you aren't doing heavy video or desktop publishing or some other REALLY processor intensive stuff, why would you need a screaming machine?

But, alas, the time does come for those not content with the way things are. For me the time is soon. The Mini is just too much to keep my Umax box going. I suspect more than a few here see this as well. And so another chapter begins...

I have been reluctant to tell my SuperMac friends, but a few weeks ago, I found a nice deal on a G4/450 Dual Processor to replace Ron's C600. The 144MB RAM limit just got to be too much of an obstacle with the C600. It was a pleasant surprise how much "stuff" we could move from the UMAX to the G4: Monitor, Radeon PCI card, USB/Firewire PCI card, hard drive, film scanner, compact flash card reader, DYMO LableWriter, Palm cradle, even his Epson 700 printer (using Gimp Print). For that matter, the only piece of hardware that we could not move was the old SCSI UMAX scanner. I tried a SCSI PCI card in the G4 but it gave it deep sleep problems.

I will probably still hang out here, as long as this list lasts. This was the first forum I joined, and for me has always been the friendliest and most helpful of the dozen or so I have tried over the years.

Hey, where else would I have found out about RAM sandwiches, Jeff's finger gymnastics, or a hundred other useful tips.

Nancy
