Excellent read Pastor Mac.
You almost had me crying (not really, but feeling
sentimental).
I agree that the macmini, minimac is quite attactive.
Right now, i'm doing a simple Quark text document and
typing in Quark, and whether it's due to my font
management, is really really really slow.
I mean, i'm where you and many folks are at. I have a
400Mhz G3 which, though works, isn't the speed demon
it used to be on OS9.
now the powerlogix 1Gig at $220 is really nice, but
shoot, that's bout near half a minimac.
The problem for me is that i love love LOVE dual
monitors. Maybe if i get bored some weekend, i'll try
to span 3 and see if that works.
from what i remember, the macmini isn't into dual
action. yeah, one is enough--just like a marriage, but
since i primarily run photoshop, quark, illustrator,
macromedia, i love love LOVE to have the second
monitor for palettes. If the minimac can do dual, i'd
already be there (sorry s900).
Everything that i have in my system is pretty much up
to speed except for the CPU and bus, and that's
something that the minimac can solve, or a dual G5.
Responding to another poster, i agree, getting a dual
G5 at the end of the PPC life is really attractive. i
mean, i can still do all i need for another two years.
we S900 people aren't on the cutting edge of
software/hardware. We're either more deliberate,
cheap or broke.
When that poster said that an AGP dual G5 would blow
me away compared to what i have now, i think he/she
was absolutely right. and i hate DMA and the RIAA.
and yes, i'd like just once to have a real PPC mac. i
wanna be a real live boy. i mean, we've seen the blue
and white G3s, the nice silvery G4s, the metal G5s,
and i'm stuck with this beige 80's box with two black
CD/DVD drives, a missing door and a blue iomega Zip.
quite colorful, but man i'd like a nicely designed
box. i mean, i am a designer after all right?
i'd probably never buy the mac mini, the S900 has
tainted me towards having flexibilty and options.
though the only reason why we needed to tinker is that
we're always missing what a modern mac would have
built in.
but let's talk about a REAL world mac mini and not the
$500 option. well, you'll need the gig of ram. i mean
seriously, this S900 with panther 10.3.9, with safari,
text editor and suitcase running is chewing up 450MB
of my 1 gig.
the superdrive. no question. yes.
i'll be cheap and forgo the wirless keyboard and
mouse. i have those.
Ok now we're talking $825 with just a 40GB hard drive.
so the $220 CPU doesn't look too bad. i have my gig of
ram, 200 GB HD and the ability to hook up ADB and SCSI
stuff. oh yeah!
and really 1Gig in ram isn't all that nowadays either.
again, i love the minimac. love the small footprint
and coolness of it, but i'd rather have that $3-4K pro
machine. and since $3000 is a year off, i'd have to
settle for that $200 CPU.
so do we really have a choice? those with money do,
but those like us, well, with certain needs and
desires, the upgrade path is still open.
Also, once u've got ur firewire, ur usb, ur hard
drives and max ram, ur DVD and CD, and ATA card, i
think the CPU is the last upgradeable item. so i hope.
so one more upgrade, just one more i promise and
that's it.
