Does anyone have any ideas how to recover it to a functional level. Or should I try Western Digital and see if they will take it back, I don't know how long their warranty lasts.
WD's warranty is usually 3 years. You can go to their website and enter the serial number of your drive, and they will show you the warranty status of your drive. I've returned 2 or 3 WD drives under warranty over the years, you get a refurb drive in return for just the cost of shipping.
