To carry the argument for the current state further

*  The "little X" is about the same size as the X in the upper-right
corner for terminating SeaMonkey.  If you place your cursor over the tab
bar X (don't selected it, just "mouse over"), however, you will see that
its button is larger than the box around the X in the upper-right corner.

*  With many, many tabs open and with a X on each to close it, you
create the risk of closing a tab when you really meant to select the
adjacent tab.

Yes, the current tab -- the tab that has focus -- needs better
distinction.  But the use of the "little X" at the right end of the tab
bar to close the current tab is something with which I am quite
comfortable.
