We have had a hardware error in the systems that allow us to reliably
generate the release — Without these systems anything we create will be
of unknown quality/stability.

I searched for a bug on Bugzilla to track this issue and I found bug
870207[1].
However, last comment[2] on bug 870207 is from about two weeks ago and
states that the machine (a Mac mini?) "came up with a gray screen and a
blinking folder with a question mark". On a Mac it means that the
firmware cannot locate a valid system volume or booter file, pointing to
a file system or hardware problem.
I cannot find any other bugs related to this issue to "follow", am I
missing them or are there none?

I don't think there are any. Basically, they're having a severe machine problem and it needs to be fixed/replaced to resume builds. it doesn't help that it is a long Memorial Day holiday weekend for Americans too. :(
