A managed switch can be bought for very little. Bunch of HP 2512/2524s on ebay that go for $50 USD or less shipped, lot of similar others. In the scheme of things, compared to paying for 8 DSL lines, that's nothing. Doing VLANs properly all on one switch is probably pretty safe if done right (biggest risk in those kind of setups is accidental misconfiguration).
