i wouldn't want to take credit for this "idea" - it's just the way UHJ works, and for a very good reason. Using higher orders, you could create sharper virtual microphones, but then you are messing with the overall balance. for a stereo downmix to be meaningful in the general case (or a mono one, for that matter), the balance of sounds should be pretty much the same as in the full-sphere version. which means you might as well disregard the higher orders.
