There are also ways of Matrixing LR stereo to LCR described by Gerzon in "Hierarchical Transmission System for Multispeaker Stereo", JAES, Vol.40, No.9, Sep 1992 (and another article that gives somewhat different coefficients that I cannot find at present). I have played with the recommendations of these articles with excellent results -- the coefficients are easy to set up with RME's TotalMix. In such a case, the LR speakers need to be at +/- 45 degrees rather than the usual +/- 30.
