Yes, I've been getting grief and ridicule from all over for my collection
of low end machines, dotting my living room in ever increasing numbers.
when I tell them I want to start a charity organization someday (when I've
learned enough) which puts these old things on the net, via my own
survpc-friendly isp, and give them out to needy individuals, they calm down
a little. they are also amazed by my DOS surfing 286. Absolutely
astounded that it is connecting to a normal ISP and doing surfing. So,
essentially, the knowledge about computers in the popular brain isn't that
much better than it ever was, even though there is a fridge that will use
the internet to scan barcodes and order more supplies of the foods you
use... really nifty, flat touch screen monitor and barcode scanner, put in
the the UPC code of your last can of sauce, and hit a few keys, hey presto,
they'll deliver the order of sauce and charge your bank account. Can pay
your utility bills with a microwave too, I read it in the Globe and Mail
technology section last night. they were talking about the coming advent
of "smart homes" where the home will have an integrated computer network
hooked up to the www and the household appliances.
Go figger a virus in your toaster causing your toast to turn into cow patties?
Or your oven seizing your first-born child and turning it into thanksgiving
dinner with all the trimmings?
I wanna live in a smart home. I don't eat toast or have children!
bye,
