I would say, you have quite a lot choices. Since your modem is slow I
would suggest any brand of KA9Q with the built-in ppp stack and
dialer and Readmail. So you could send and download emails, usenet
articles simultanously, and with Readmail you can read this format (and
many others) and compose replies.

In not too far future I intend to package such minimalist but effectiv
solutions on my homepage.
