I can suggest one possibility, but I can't vouch for it's likelihood in
your case.

A friend of mine once gave me an aged 286 that had been stuck in a
closet for a number of years. Same behavior. Would boot up fine, run
for a while, shut off, boot up, shut off, and so on.

Tinkered with a bunch of different things. Finally got desparate and
opened up the power supply. Seems either sitting in that closet, being
used by a heavy smoker for a long time, or both, had resulted in a
-thick- layer of lint inside the power supply. Maybe a half-inch sheet
of packed lint & dust over everything. Would peel off like a blanket,
that kind of thick.

Thing is, that layer of dust & crud insulated the components inside the
power supply. So the system'd start up, the power supply'd heat up, and
then a litle thermal cutout -- basically like a circuit breaker, but
more like a thermostat -- would shut the thing down. Everything cooled
off, system came back up, and the cycle started again.

Thoroughly cleaned the thing out, and the system worked fine -- for a
286-12, of course.

Also, some components tend to run hotter at lower voltages. Been out of
electrical school too long to remember -which- components.

Again, this is not an authoritative answer, but you might want to check
that. Couldn't hurt to disconnect the power from the machine and go
through and clean out any accumulated crud.
