Day Brown said in part: "... It aint just the porn. 90% of the messages I get are spam off the net. The BBS QWKmail system had no spam at all. ..."
SPAM is a nuisance at best and insulting and demeaning to a lot of folks. IMO I'll put up with the inbound SPAM to have unfettered ACCESS to the maximum number of web pages, ftp sites, and pass word controlled access to proprietary intranets. A simple solution to handle SPAM is implement a self-controlled filtering of email. There are DOS, Windows, and email browser based solutions which are available as freeware, shareware, and proprietary. Take advantage of the access you have to multiplicity of tools and suggestions which the net offers. Same thing as tossing the junk mail into the paper recycle system or using it to heat your location - oh ya, you may be recycling the stuff ... If you want a closed access system then you can pay a fee for proprietary access and have someone else filter your email. Like the choice of digging a well or putting in a septic system versus belonging to a water district or sewer district. There are solutions for handling SPAM - but they do require effort to implement at the least or paying a fee to have someone else handle that type of garbage. Of course if ya only use a BBS based system you won't have unfettered ACCESS to the maximum number of web pages, ftp sites, and pass word controlled access to proprietary intranets. So maybe that is what your really advocating is we all should return to the era when computers were not interconnected by high-level computer systems using high-level hardware. Hmmm, I also find it really interesting that your BBS - ASCII solution leaves out all the pictographically languages which make up well over half of the worlds inhabitants. Reminds me of pre-French Revolution popular history comments attributed to the then Queen of France: Let them eat cake.
