You have to be prepared to do alot of reading and experimenting to
learn how to be really secure.

Here are a couple of suggestions for a beginner, I am one myself:

1. Go to http://www.psionic.com/abacus/abacus_sentry.html
and get Sentry, which is an active port scanner.
It is not a perfect solution, but you can learn alot
by reading the docs and trying it out.

2. Go to /etc/services and start commenting out different
ports you don't use. Make a backup first, because some
ports are needed certain software, and you might forget
which ones they are.

3. Also look at /etc/ftpaccess; /etc/inetd.conf; and
/etc/host.deny

4. if in doubt, just go into yast and turn off inetd ,
and make sure you set "No telnet by root"

By the time you sort all that out, you'll have a good idea
of what is going on.
The program Sentry is alot of fun to play with if you have a
little lan going. Set up Sentry according to instructions,
and try to get in from a machine on your lan, then see how
/etc/hosts.deny gets changed.
