My approach re: fvwm2 was to use a second taskbar or buttonbar that is
a bit easier to modify than the fvwm2 buttonbar. I like tkdesk since
the code additions to get it to see additional icons and programs is
quite minimal. Get the latest tkdesk from the guy's website. I dont
recall or have the url. On the mousie menus, I added a network popup
menu by copying an earlier one and making the entries say whatever apps
I wanted. I even added cute little icons by looking at where fvwm2
places it mini icon files. To add a nice background, I use xv at the
init part. Something like:
* "I" exec xv -max -root /usr/share/pictures/barton.gif -quit
I also turn off xmessages by commenting its line in the init functions.
You can change the default behavior of email by changing the mailfunc
and the same with the web and news. I actually wrote an additional
buttonbar for the fvwm2 buttons. Not an easy task since I got quite
lost initially in the .fvwm2rc file. I think if there were a graphical
front end to this file which would allow people to see what each area
does, that would be good.
To write a network popup or any popup, easiest way is to look at the
existing popups under workmenu (left mouse click on default fvwm2) and
add one yourself.
You can have fvmw2 start programs at the init line, you can add or
remove the buttonbar and add a new pager, etc by altering, removing
lines in the init area. You can also have it change the state of
things by adding lines like:
style xeyes NoTitle, Sticky
Cruise down in the fvwm2 file until you see a bunch of these. With
xeyes set this way you can start it via the init function and not have
title bars and have it follow you around in different desktops.
Hope this helps.
