I can understand the issue you have since I value myself as a pretty
much a linux novice in a lot of things. I started messing around about
two years ago after almost 8 years of OS/2 stuff. I hesitated at NT
stuff for awhile since my work required it; but I have to admit my love
was always OS/2 warp. It seemed so powerful and sleek yet people
looked at it and compared it to some stationwagon while another
operating system was a race car or airplane. Well... About dodging
problems. I think its good to face issues head on with linux; do the
battle first time and learn the lessons. Then move on to other battles
and other lessons. Everyone did a linux install the first time. My
first time was divided into intense periods of failure with somewhat
shorter bursts of momentary success stretched over several botched
installs. Even one that took my whole system down. I was pretty mad
at that and went cautiously for some time. Now, my approach is to read
the howto's, read the webstuff, read books, attempt to do the thing,
perhaps fail and then return with new armor on. I would say I have
learned a few things and I think linux is a fair teacher. My goals now
are to make myself better at understanding linux, learn how to use
adabas D and informix, and stretch my horizons a bit in other ways.
Ways that I think linux is peculiarly able to bring me.

Best of luck.
