Thanks for the quick reply.  Is there any quick and easy way to upgrade
the kernel as you suggest in openSuse (i.e., with a package)?  Also, I
am not sure of what "+ beeping" means.

The problem is that I currently use this machine a lot for work and am
afraid of making too many changes that I'm not sure how to rescue from
myself. For example, both my video (ati radeon) and my wireless
(madwifi) are supported with kernel modules that I think I'll have to
reinstall if I upgrade the kernel. If I download kernel source and
install it, can I just reinstall these packages (with smart or yast) and
they will recompile with the new kernel?  Do I have to go through all of
the configuring (taking hours and guessing many unknowns) to configure
the source kernel from kernel.org?

Also, I'm attaching the suspend2ram log just to see you we can fix this
without upgrading the kernel from the Suse packaged one (yes, I'm a bit
of a coward messing with my work machine).
