I am with you, Martin. I run a doggy old IBM P3/800 computer on Linux
(currently I use Mepis distribution - great first timers Linux distro that
runs directly off the CD to try it out). Users of the Monopoly software owned
by Mr Gates do not know what they are missing out on!
I sleep well knowing that I am not supporting a monopoly company, or ripping
off the software companies by using unlicensed software. I also do not have
to pay for anti-spyware or anti anything software! I estimate I save about
$Au500/year by not buying software, and another $Au500/year on un-needed
hardware. There are solutions to run Windows software if really necessary,
but I have never needed it. (I receive Word .doc files, edit them with
OpenOffice, resave in Word format, & resend them. I have never had a
complaint. They do net even realise I am editing in anything but Word.) The
same applies broadly to Spreadsheets, Presentations, etc etc. For ordinary
SOHO applications, there is now little reason not to change, and if on the
net, every reason to change.

regards Doug

PS: I only use Text for email, so there is no way that a Linux box can attach
a virus to outgoing emails! I often see spurious emails coming in, but as I
have no Microsoft software running, there is no way the viruses can be
executed or passed on!
