The US will not have to influence politics to stay in Iraq. As to who
is in control it is becoming less and less a simple question. Not
surprisingly, our idiot child president did not learn from Viet Nam and
the Neo Cons around him don't care if we end up in a permanent state of
war with the rest of the world.
In Viet Nam after the Bao Die (sp?) monarchy fell there was a succession
of "popular" leaders (Minh, Ky, Theiu etc,) who quickly realized that
their survival depended more on American arms and money than on the
efforts of their own country. Thus at the same time we were trying to
"Vietnomize" the war ("we will not send American boys to Asia to do
what Asian boys should be doing for their own country" LBJ) the
government du jur was doing everything it could to keep us there knowing
full well that if we left they would be toast. Yesterday it was
announced by the defense department that in spite of all these hundreds
of Iraqi police and army units we have been training none of them could
operate successfully without the presence of US troops. As the people
of Iraq grow more and more unhappy with the US presence the government
grows more and more dependent on it and as a result less and less
popular with the people. We are headed for a situation in which we
cannot leave and cannot win. Afghanistan is heading the same way. The
old war lords are poised to win the next elections for governors which
will set up the same instability that exists now in Iraq. We can no more
afford to maintain this kind of empire than could the French in
Indochina or the Soviet Union in central Asia. We kid ourselves that in
was Ronald Raygun who brought down the Soviets. It was Osama and while
we choose not to accept that he knows what he did and how. He brought
down one super power and has no doubt he can do it again. So far it is
working. He is bleeding us white all over the world and at home.

I expect the occupation to grow. Either the US will influence politics
enough to have the appearance of home rule or if that fails then it
will be more obvious they are under US control. At any rate something
as valuable as all that oil will be commandeered and don't be
surprised if the "conflict" expands.
