I can't quite remember the details any more, but I seem to remember that they were in a pretty odd position beforehand, which prevented them from being able to kill only a few hundred Europeans. Jared Diamonds two books "Guns, Germs, and Steel", and "Collapse" had lots of stuff -- but I just don't recall the details any more.
