Cornell for Sustainable Development But What About a Living Wage? UAW applauds President Skorton's announcement that Cornell will make a huge commitment to support sustainable development on campus and around the world. We are disappointed, however, that he did not also commit to sustainable wages for Cornell's own employees. A wage too low to sustain a family puts that family's future at risk, just as surely as greenhouse gases put our environment at risk. Without a living wage it is very difficult or impossible to save for the future, buy a house, pay for a college education and so on. One definition of sustainable development is "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Isn't that the definition of a living wage? President Skorton stated that "sustainability is one of the major issues or our time," and we are proud Cornell is developing sustainability initiatives around campus and throughout the world. But if Cornell does not also prioritize the sustainability of its own regular employees then its commitment to and understanding of sustainable development is sorely lacking.
