Wind, water and sun are absolutely part of the silver shotgun which we need in
our quest for sustainable energy and energy independence--although I think that
conservation is first and foremost. I would tend to look with a somewhat
jaundiced eye at the research which is funded by ExxonMobil, General Electric,
Schlumberger and Toyota.
Grain ethanol production--on a small, local scale--still has the same benefit
that it did when Rockefeller and Standard Oil funded Prohibition the last time
that ethanol came head-to-head with gasoline. It can be made easily by almost
anyone and made with a very small capital cost. The "waste" product, wet
distillers grain, is a high-quality livestock feed.
Note that I am not advocating large centralized ethanol plants with
concommitant trucking, drying, and re-trucking expenses. But as a portion of an
alternative energy portfolio, grain ethanol occupies a useful space.
