Summit Highlights America's Climate Choices

Hundreds of participants gathered at the Summit on America's Climate
Choices to discuss the challenge of climate change and to begin a dialog
on how the nation should respond. Speakers presented a wide range of
perspectives and ideas, as did participants who asked questions throughout
the day. Representative Alan Mollohan (D-WV), responsible for the
congressional request for the study, focused on the need for independent
advice, based on science, to guide decision-making. James Mulva, CEO of
ConocoPhillips, discussed climate change mitigation from an industry
perspective. Jane Lubchenco, newly appointed head of NOAA, focused on the
need to take steps now to address changes that are already taking place.

Day two of the Summit saw more in-depth discussions of the unique
challenges of climate change and the available tools to meet those
challenges. Eileen Claussen of the Pew Center on Global Climate Change
spoke on the challenge of integrating a national response into a global
framework. Carter Roberts of the World Wildlife Federation, Howard Frumkin
of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and James Woolsey of
VantagePoint Venture Partners gave a comprehensive overview of ecosystem,
health, and national security aspects of climate change.
