I think that you can get the effect you are trying to
get in ASVG3 by using rect statements like:

<svg:rect x="21" y="0" fill="rgb(150, 150, 150)"
width="3" height="3" />
<svg:rect x="24" y="0" fill="rgb(200, 200, 200)"
width="3" 
height="3" />

That is, don't use opacity.  You'll need to figure out
the range of rgb values to get an acceptable
gray-scale for your application.
