Poking around a bit, I found this previous thread [1] of discussion here. I don't quite remember the conclusion if there was one, but it looks as though the need to use try and catch for getSVGDocument() and contentDocument may no longer be needed. I think that until IE/native provides filter and SMIL support and IE6 through 8 are phased out we'll have to assume that at least some users are still using ASV - fortunately it is a pretty robust implementation and handles most of what a developer can think to throw at it. This would tend, I think, to recommend the former rather than the latter, unless someone sees a) a difference between the two or b) knows of a modern browser that doesn't handle getSVGDocument() .

Me, too. I don't know the answer. Google has code which uses one, and refers to the other in an accompanying comment. On the whole, right now I feel slightly more inclined to use contentDocument--note, though, that I would have given a differ- ent answer yesterday.
