OK, time for me to put my hand up... I had a lot of problems. Partly because I was not properly terminating my comms thread while testing the code and that was often leaving the port tied up. Partly because I was trying to use hardware handshaking which was not supported by the hardware. Partly because I was trying to set Stop Bits to (integer)1 not SB1 which has integer value 0.
