Thanks, it's a concept that's got plenty of room for growth. As in, not everyone knows about it or is using it but when they do it seems to be something they like. The basic idea is you can create a list of feeds, as many lists as you'd like (being reasonable of course). They can be public or private. The public ones can be downloaded by anyone else in any number of formats (opml, rss, ocs, etc). The private ones can only be downloaded by the person creating them. These lists can then be used to do things like provide a jumpstart collection, syncronize lists between different machines (work|home, mac|pc) or simply a way to announce your collection of feeds. You could do clever things like create an account for your reader program and setup lists. Those lists could be used for things like the default jumpstart set, Top 10, New and Interesting, etc. That way you could give your reader users a way to download more than just a single list. > I would be interested in using such a thing, but I am > worried I might break it. I am currently gathering > loads and loads of unqualified feeds. You may want to seriously question the value of unqualified feeds. There are plenty of things that create RSS-like things. Not all of them are worth tracking. Namely things like search-driven systems. These have a virtually unlimited number of possible parameters, such that tracking them would be pointless. Not that they're not worthwhile; they certainly ARE. But tracking them in a directory isn't all that practical. > Therefore I might want a public list of say 200,000+, is the > architecure intended for such a load? Yes, we already know about over 300,000. We can support plenty more. Although reviewing them will certainly be a challenge (I can already hear groans from the reviewers...) For things in bulk we have ways to handle bulk submitting so ask before you give me more than a few hundred. Take a look at the xml-rpc calls and consider having your DB speak to our DB and do things automagically. Folks like bloglines, newsisfree and others already use it. This lets their systems download details (about new and existing feeds) from us and in exchange they keep us apprised of new feeds as they discover them. It's a win-win for all parties. > Plus then to have multiple users accessing such a list? For lists of great popularity we can work out effective ways to cache or otherwise manage the load. We're in the process of bringing more machinery online and will add more as needs dictate so don't worry about load. We can discuss how your tool might best use the system. I can chat about this with you on the phone if you'd like. Drop me an e-mail with your details. -Bill Kearney Syndic8.com ------------------------ Yahoo!
