Probably start from the ground up, since I wouldn't have to worry about the GPL (Gnu Public License) or hacking OPC (Other People's Code).
The no-graphics conservatism is also what gave me the idea of the gateway/firewall idea, since there's "just" byte-processing ... and the bonus is no [expensive] byte-swapping [necessary for the x86] for endianness! OK, I'm geeking out a bit, here. Which leads me to ... Any other programmers on this list with whom I can talk shop? I'm an 11-year veteran programmer of embedded systems (settop boxes, cable-modems, satellites, pro-grade measurement instruments, ...) so the working code part should be relatively easy.
