Hello, Group! this is my first time posting here. I am a lover of
System 6 and want to contribute to this list in some way. I am not a
programmer; I am a musician. So I have some off-the-wall questions
and ideas regarding things in the 6 Community. Please have patience
with me . . .

For starters, why don't we start a petition requesting that David
Pierson spend some time on a 6 Browser that is as good as WannaBe?
Not just a recompile of the application into the language that 6 is
written, but a new 6 Text Browser. Of course, we would have to be
willing to pay for it as it would most likely need such a major
rewrite that it would basically be a whole new product just to be
WannaBe, much less a whole new application. I feel that the only
thing holding back SE/30s (et al) from being REALLY viable (once
tweaked with the right software) is the lame browser choice.

And how about some OT/connectivity stuff that is more modern and
written in 6-code?

And is there a Color QuickDraw version for 6? (This makes iCab so
much more decent on an SE/30 one-bit monitor.) And how about Thread
Manager and Drag and Drop? If these were rewritten in 6-code would
the system be able to use them? Anyone, anyone? Stop laughin and
help me here . . .

I, as well as most on this list, realize that with 6 these old babies
can fairly fly. We have all searched high and low for ancient inits
and cdevs to add "missing" functionality, and we all still end up
setting up 7 in order to browse if we have room to do so, because
that is just what you do if you just can't cope with MacLynx or Samba.

As mentioned previously, I am by trade a professional orchestral
musician. In my field, one plays pieces of music that are published
and then sold or rented to the performer/ensemble. In many cases the
music was written with no specific purpose in mind. But often a
piece will be commissioned from a composer by a wealthy individual or
an organization. (My music fraternity in undergrad raised
commissioning fees to get new works from the pens of promising young
composers on several occasions.) Maybe if we banded together and
paid a group fee in advance we could get a browser (or whatever) with
a nice, low shareware/freeware price tag for us to post for download
somewhere.

Since our little community is just that - little - why do we not
attempt to form a "6-wares Software Commissioning Group?" I would
not presume to say that I know how to go about doing that. But I
would be an active member. I would be willing to pay dues. I would
be willing to pay for my portion of the shareware produced for this
group. I would want to be in on the beta testing, too.

If a group such as this lobbied various programmers with requests for
6-compatible (or 6-only!) patches, upgrades and applications and
proffered up our paltry commissioning grant to the programmer we
might be taken seriously. But then again . . . I have enquired about
a paired-down version of iCab that might work with 6. Here was the
response:

So much for the power of the individual regarding "obsolete"
operating systems. If we formed some kind of group to show that
there would be a few actual purchases of these new products as well
as a small "development fee" we could generate some interest in our
beloved old OS.

Wouldn't it be nice to get your hands on some BRAND NEW 6-wares
rather than always having to research and Fetch things. Talk about
Thinking Different! My only fear would be that "due to an unforeseen
rise in interest" Apple would make 6.0.8 a pay item at some point.

My best to you all.
