Actually, the limit is not on the hard drive size per se, but rather on the partition size. Depending on the particular OS (and hardware), this limit moves somewhat. But there is a 2GB partition size limit in the older OS's. Dividing up a large drive into numerous sub-2GB (1.95GB recommended; 2.00GB actually doesn't work) pieces solves the problem nicely.
