I understand the just-shoot-it recommendation, but honestly, I would
really like to get this to work.

If you want to use System 6 as the client and OS X as the server, you
can probably forget it with Panther. You can still get System 7 to see
Panther shares, with a new enough version of AppleTalk client.

Well, I just looked up netatalk and they say it works under OS X. Alas, TCP
only. So that is a no-go.

So, what are you guys trying to accomplish, exactly? As far as I know, any version of OS X can be a client for any AppleShare server, and as I said before, new enough AppleTalk clients can talk to even the Panther AppleShare server. Marten has a page (http://www.euronet.nl/users/mvdk/osx.html) that details how to get System 6 clients talking to a 10.1 server. You can do the same thing with Panther, but it doesn't work. (I tried.) I forget whether it works on 10.2. With a new enough AppleShare client, System 7 can still talk to Panther AppleShare server.

Really, for things like this you may as well use anything other than OS X.
Just toss an old box between the System 6 system and the OS X system and
things should be fine. But Apple seems to be as eager to ignore anything
before NeXT OS X as they are to ignore the Apple II, so trying to use OS X
as a bridge is just asking for headaches.

Well, we're talking about networking things that are more than 15 years apart in age. In computer time, that's more than one generation. Apple has done an incredible job of keeping compatibility with older hardware and software, but eventually the cord must be cut -- as it was with Panther only running on New World machines, for example.

OS X is a fine operating system, as is System 6. It's likely that nothing will ever again be as elegant or simple as System 6 was and is, but that doesn't take away from OS X's technical superiority. Anyone familiar with Unix recognizes the feat Apple has done with OS X, making it easy enough for the "mere mortal."
