If you have OSX 10.2 or under, you can turn on the Appletalk filesharing as well by going into netinfo manager and enabling it. First up, open netinfo manager from /Applications/Utilities/Netinfo Manager, and click the lock in the lower left of the window & authenticate yourself. Click on 'config' in the middle of the 3 panes, then click on "AppleFileServer". Once you've done that there should be many options in the bottom pane of the window. Scroll down until you find "use_appletalk", and if your system is default it'll have a "0" to the right of it. Doubleclick on the zero and change it to a "1". Quit Netinfo Manager, and save when prompted.
If you restart personal file sharing, you should be able to connect to that OSX machine from the system 6/7 boxes without needing tcp/ip. I've used it for quite a while, until moving to Panther where the config changed. Under 10.3, the util "SharePoints" is supposed to allow you to set AFS properties like above, one of which is "Use AppleTalk" but I haven't had a working early mac running to test it yet.
