Marten,
That's a standard Unix tarball, and to compile it, you follow the directions in the README or INSTALL file; in this case, it's in the README file. This particular application installs with:
./configure && make && make install
It requires Berkeley DB version 4, but apparently OS X doesn't come with that. I'm going to try compiling and installing that, and see where I get.
I'll keep you guys posted.

PS - I only entered the Mac world with OS X - I'm a Unix geek, not a Mac geek... ;) But now I've seen the light and I love to play with this amazing operating system - especially 6.0.x and 7.y [y=1 or y=5.3].

Only netatalk 2 requires Berkeley DB4, you should find an earlier version that will work without that requirement, chasing dep's may be a small problem. Installing DB4 should also be do-able for OSX.

Me use all except OSX, like all and dont play favorites. ;)

Well, DB4 compiled and installed without issue, and it looks like netatalk is compiling just fine, but the CUPS support is messed up so I just disabled it. :)

More to come.
