Looking at the list of U.S. team members below that Garry posted made me
wonder what country would stack up the best against the U.S. 1-on-1? The
U.S, would certainly take down any country in dual meet scoring, but who
would come closest? If we were to make up some rankings on this how would
they look?
While I'm on the subject of team competition let me revive the subject of
what would be the most exciting relay event at the Olympics if they had
it, the 4 X 800. I'd love to see the OG or WC end with a relay day that
adds in the 4 X 800, sprint medley and maybe a distance medley and 4 X
1500 to the 4 X 100 and 4 X 4. Of course you would have to do qualifying
based on an addition of season marks for members of each squad as there is
no way you could run rounds of these things. Get the top 8-10 teams on
paper and have them go at it. It would only be one additional competition
after the individual events are over so you could probably get the top
tier guys and gals to run it.
I think there would be a nice marketing aspect of it too. After all the
indivdual glory is doled out it comes down to people running as a rteam
for their country. Yes, individuals run for their country, but the team
aspect makes the representational aspect even more meaningful.
