as of today, this is what the U.S. situation for Sydney looks like (as far as
the best info T&FN has been able to dig up)
Men
100: Maurice Greene, Curtis Johnson, Jon Drummond.
200: John Capel, Floyd Heard, Coby Miller.
400: Michael Johnson, Alvin Harrison, Antonio Pettigrew.
800: Mark Everett, Rich Kenah, Bryan Woodward.
1500: Gabe Jennings, Jason Pyrah. Third and 4th finishers Michael Stember and
Jason Lunn hope to hit the A standard, 3:36.80; Steve Holman (5th) has one.
Steeple: Pascal Dobert, Mark Croghan, Tony Cosey.
5000: Adam Goucher, Brad Hauser. Nick Rogers (3rd) lacks the A of 13:29.00;
Matt Lane (4th) has it.
10,000: Meb Keflezighi, Alan Culpepper, Abdi Abdirahman.
110H: Allen Johnson, Mark Crear, Terrence Trammell.
400H: Angelo Taylor, Eric Thomas, James Carter.
Marathon: Rod DeHaven.
20K Walk: Tim Seaman. Seaman has the B standard. No other Trials finishers
within 1:50 of the 1:23:00 A standard.
50K Walk: Curt Clausen, Andrew Hermann, Philip Dunn.
4 x 100: Greene, C. Johnson, Drummond, Brian Lewis, Kenny Brokenburr, Tim
Montgomery, Williams, Capel, Miller and Trammell make up the pool from which
coaches will select six names as possible participants in each round. After
the first round, no more than two of the six names may be changed.
4 x 400: Same rules as in the 4x1—pool of M. Johnson, Harrison, Pettigrew,
Jerome Young, Calvin Harrison, Danny McCray, Ja’Warren Hooker and Taylor.
High Jump: Charles Austin, Kenny Evans, Nathan Leeper.
Pole Vault: Lawrence Johnson, Nick Hysong, Chad Harting.
Long Jump: Melvin Lister, Dwight Phillips, Savanté Stringfellow. Third- and
4th-placers Walter Davis and Robert Howard will contest the triple jump only.
Triple Jump: Robert Howard, LaMark Carter, Walter Davis.
Shot: Adam Nelson, C.J. Hunter, Andy Bloom.
Discus: Adam Setliff, John Godina, Anthony Washington.
Hammer: Lance Deal, Kevin McMahon. All other finalists—led by Jud Logan
(3rd)—lack the A standard and will chase it.
Javelin: Breaux Greer. Tom Pukstys (2nd) has the A standard, which Greer does
not. Should any other finalist(s) achieve the A standard (269-0/82.00), that
thrower(s) and Pukstys would make up the team. Greer can guarantee a spot by
making standard.
Decathlon: Tom Pappas, Chris Huffins, Kip Janvrin.
Women
100: Marion Jones, Inger Miller, Chryste Gaines.
200: Jones, Miller, Nanceen Perry.
400: LaTasha Colander-Richardson, Jearl Miles-Clark, Michelle Collins. The
Sydney 400 and 800 schedules overlap—including the quarterfinals in the
former starting 20 minutes before the semis of the latter—so Miles-Clark must
choose one. She’s likely to lean toward the 800, which would add Monique
Hennagan (4th) here, but hasn’t yet said so.
800: Hazel Clark, Miles-Clark, Joetta Clark-Diggs. Should Miles-Clark choose
the 400, Meredith Valmon (4th) would be added. After Sacramento, Valmon said
she was retired, so Amy Ross-Schroer (5th) could see action.
1500: Regina Jacobs, Suzy Favor Hamilton, Marla Runyan. Jacobs may choose to
run just the 5000, the final of which falls one day before the 1500 heats. In
that case, Shayne Culpepper (4th) would join the team.
5000: Jacobs, Elva Dryer, Amy Rudolph. Deena Drossin (2nd) opted out in favor
of the 10,000. Jacobs will likely withdraw too in favor of the 1500, which
would add Anne Marie Lauck (5th).
10,000: Drossin, Jen Rhines, Libbie Hickman.
100H: Gail Devers, Melissa Morrison, Sharon Jewell.
400H: Sandra Glover, Kim Batten, Tonja Buford-Bailey.
Marathon: Christine Clark.
20K Walk: Michelle Rohl, Debbi Lawrence, Joanne Dow. China, the former nation
of runner-up Yueling Chen, will apparently not grant her the required
permission to compete.
4 x 100: Pool of Jones, Miller, Gaines, Torri Edwards, Gail Devers, Perry,
Carlette Guidry and Passion Richardson.
4 x 400: Pool of Colander-Richardson, Miles-Clark, Collins, Hennagan, Miki
Barber, Andrea Anderson, Monique Henderson and Jones.
High Jump: Karol Damon, Erin Aldrich, Amy Acuff.
Pole Vault: Stacy Dragila, Kellie Suttle, Mel Mueller.
Long Jump: Jones, Dawn Burrell, Shana Williams.
Triple Jump: Nicole Gamble. No jumpers have the 46-51/4 (14.15) A standard.
Tiombé Hurd (3rd) is closest this year, with an indoor 46-11/2.
Shot: Connie Price-Smith, Jesseca Cross, Teri Tunks (4th). Dawn Dumble (3rd)
will seek the 60-1/2 (18.30) A standard.
Discus: Seilala Sua, Suzy Powell, Kris Kuehl.
Hammer: Dawn Ellerbe, Amy Palmer, Cross.
Javelin: Lynda Blutreich. No Americans have the A standard of 196-10 (60.00).
Heptathlon: DeDee Nathan, Shelia Burrell, Kelly Blair-LaBounty.
