Not sure what you classify as medals.

However Ben Johnson won bronze (.03 quicker would have got silver) at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics with an injured hamstring.

He also won bronze in the 4x100M relay at the Los Angeles Olympics.

Gold and World Record at the 1987 World Championships.

Should have been awarded gold and world record at the Seoul Olympics (plus a chance at an additional medal in the sprint relay).

And, lest we forget, semifinalist in the 100M at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, and, had the drug testers not kept him up virtually all night the night before his race, should have had a shot in the final at Barcelona.

A three time Olympian with a career that should have spanned even longer.

World Record time at the Seoul Olympics has still not been beaten, even though tracks are faster, there are now loudspeakers behind the blocks to get them on their way faster etc. etc.

As Ben eased up in the Seoul Final at 80M, his performance speaks for itself.... and five of the eight finalists at Seoul have now been publicly linked to drug use, so he was competing on a level playing field.  What you saw at Seoul was what you got.

And a little known fact is that possibly Ben's quickest race ever was in the semifinal at Seoul.

Because he was so pissed off at the starter for calling him for a false start in the second semi-final, when the gun went off, Ben waited in his blocks for about a tenth of a second to prove his point.  At 20M he was about a meter behind the pack, by 40 meters he'd caught up, by 80 meters he was two meters in front, and from there he let down and coasted to the finish line.  His time was 10.03 into a 1.2 meter headwind.

The wind was worth at least a tenth of a second, as was his start, and easing up cost him about another tenth.

In other words, Ben had run 9.78 or better.

Them's the facts.

Sorry I wasn't clear .. By medals I meant gold since that is the only kind that seems to count when you talk about greatest ever .. One of the measures is gold harvested .. And unfortunately for Ben the two that he won were tainted by his suspensions .. Not sure who the five are from the Seoul final .. There is Ben and Linford and Dennis .. That would leave two more .. Who would those be ?? I agree that it is hard to leave Ben out of the discussion .. But unfortunately He was the only one truly singled out and caught .. Everyone else is speculative .. And the sad part is that his career and Carl's are so intertwined .. In order to validate Carl's dominance over time one has to forget about half a decade of Ben .. But Ben did exist and did dominate Carl post Los Angeles Olympics .. So makes this whole discussion even more difficult ..
