Remembering what every schoolboy/girl over your side should know (we
don't have to anymore since we've thankfully forgotten what yards are) 1
metre is about 39.37 inches, whereas of course 1 yard is 36 inches. You
see, when I was young, we hadn't yet forgotten about inches! Because it is
440 yards (10% more than 400) you basically have to compare 39.37 and
39.60 (36 plus 10%). The difference is 0.23. So, for a time of 10 minutes
(=600 seconds), the differential is just 0.23 times 600 divided by 39.37,
which is about 3.5 seconds.
My first estimate (3.6-3.7) was just calculated in my head, this time I
cheated and used a piece of paper for a long division. I'm getting old!
