You bet. ATAPI was one of the most secret of "secret societies" until
it became an SFF project. I remember some very nasty "hallway
discussions" outside the ATA meeting about this. It is one of the
reasons the hard disk drive companies were (and still are) very cool
to the idea of an ATAPI device on the same cable with an ATA hard
disk drive.
