Edan Osborne:
Hi,

I just read the recent post about replacing balenaEtcher with Rufus in the Windows install guide. However, something struck me as odd. The post mentioned that "people who install Tails from macOS represent less than 10% of installations nowadays."

My first question is simple. How exactly did Tails arrive at this figure without telemetry?

Hi,

I wrote this based on the downloads of balenaEtcher from our website:

https://gitlab.tails.boum.org/tails/tails/-/issues/16381#note_9871

Back in 2019, downloads for the Mac version of balenaEtcher represented only 6% of downloads. Since then, Apple rolled out M1 and M2 processors who cannot run Tails, so the fraction of Tails users on Mac probably decreased significantly.

I didn't do the extra work of updating this number before writing the post, so I extrapolated with a pinch of salt and wrote "less than 10%".

I would guess that it's probably less than 5% these days, unfortunately.

However, that's not the only thing I noticed. This article does not appear to be on the mailing list, and the XMPP chat appears to be silent; so, my second question: is this normal?

We forgot to approve the automatic email sent to [email protected].
I just did that. Thanks for reporting!

Best,
