I thought the main reason for this rerender /was/ to be more like them, to appease the 'why doesn't it look like Google' brigade.
As Fredrick points out we're (almost) all volunteers, all contributing to OSM to improve it's quality; be that typing in zeros & ones or, as I did yesterday, get wet feet trudging do a survey through a particularly boggy wood. All contributors have equal rights to be proud OSM & equal rights to criticise.
