I find Nik4 (https://github.com/Zverik/Nik4) useful, and if you don't want to integrate contours and grid lines using Mapnik, you might also be interested to know that QGIS can add the latter with some flexibility. I also wrote the print-osgb.py script (see https://github.com/gregrs-uk/gb-leisure-carto) which you may find useful if you're using the OSGB projection.
