Hi John, The best way of terracing a building into individual houses, but keeping the outline as something to tag for the terrace-as-a-whole, is to use the JOSM Terracer plugin, which you might be using already. Make sure you tick the "keep outline way" option. The validator (invoked when preparing to upload) will complain about overlapping buildings and/or buildings within buildings but you can ignore this. I've done this loads of times and here's a good example, where the name of the terrace (as detailed on a plaque/stone built into the front face of the terrace) bears no resemblance to the moden postal addresses of any of its members: https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/273920508
Doing it this way won't "clutter up the map" either, as you can see from the rendered example. Hope this helps!
