I just did some quick Google research. The pictures shown on this page: http://www.cbrd.co.uk/international/portugal/ indicate that the road signage for "Estradas nacionais" is always starting with just "N" and not "EN". Based on the prevailing rule "tag what you can see on the ground" wouldn't it be better to tag them just "N329"? Besides it would result in shorter signs on the map ;)

Currently the tagging in Portugal seems to be 50% with "EN" and 50% with "N".

And while we are at it:
Do you have a tagging scheme already for the relation which group each way that forms a complete auto-estrada/estrada nacionais? Like we do have in Germany for Autobahns: http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/21451 In Portugal we would need a network, like "pt:national". The operator for most bigger roads would probably be Brisa. See more details here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Relation:route#Road_Routes

If everybody agree I think the correct tagging is :
ref=A1 (for motorway)
ref=IP5 (for "itinerario principal")
ref=IC31 (for "itinerario complementario")
ref=EN329 (for "estradas nacionais")
etc...

The example :
ref=N2 *incorrect* (need to start with EN)
ref=EN 329 *incorrect* (no space needed)

I will correct the Portuguese wiki, the first paragraph describing the ref tag
need clarification (describing the format).

So just to make sure Google and me understood your portugese correctly:

The *correct* tagging for Estradas Nacionais would be:

ref=EN 329

The *incorrect* tagging would be:

ref=EN329 (without space)
ref=N 329
ref=N329
ref=329

Additionally I would remove "Estradas Nacionais" or "EN329" from the
name-tag. Right?

So to take an example: http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/25410709

Currently it's tagged like this:

name: Estrada Nacional 108
ref: N108

and I would change it to just:

ref: EN 108

Thanks again for your replies. Bom mapping :P

Viva no Wiki diz explicitamente:
/highway=primary/. Estradas Nacionais (EN, lista aqui
<http://www.estradasdeportugal.pt/index.php/prn/152-complementar-ens>).
E na lista das estradas de Portugal (oficial) tem EN
http://www.estradasdeportugal.pt/index.php/prn/152-complementar-ens
Nos mapas convencionais (em papel) sempre apareceu assim.

     Só venho de reparar o caso das nacionais !
     Devemos codificar ref=EN2 e não ref=N2 ?

     Se fora o caso, vou completar o wiki porque a pagina :
     http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Estradas
     Não diz nada sobre o ref.
     E a pagina :

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Rede_das_principais_estradas_de_Portugal
     Uso o N e não EN.

     E um ponto que precisa ser esclarecido, cada pais tem o seu
     sistema (em
     frança por exemplo usemos o N e não RN, e temos um espaço entre a
     letra
     e o numero : N 2).
