this is true of many roads, not just interstates. there's one NY state route
in the Adirondacks that is C shaped, so it's official "direction" is only
true for one of the three legs.

Closer to home for you and me, there's the little stretch coming north off Exit 25 of the NY State Thruway that is signed I-890 West and NY-7 East.
