Jed,
I am not certain then why you would spend the time and money on Audition or
Sound Forge rather than trying Audasity or Gold Wave. There may even be a
few other options out there that would let you edit sound as you describe.
I think Total Recorder has some of those option and perhaps even MP3Cut,
although you may not be able to use their free versions. Their paid
versions are pretty inexpensive, though.
Still, if you try Adobe Audition, I would be interested to hear about your
experience. I believe you will need the app, though.

highlight an audio selection that i wanna delete or whatever. For
instance, if you wanna highlight some particular aurio, you put an in
and out marker with the left and right bracket and hit delete. If i can
do things like that i'll be extremely happy. I have an older version of
adobe.
As far as your daily use, what i am doing is stuff like taking audio and
putting it under a music bed. If i can do stuff like that i'll be
thrilled.
