Tom, as far as tabs go, if you use control shift enter, to open the tab that's fine, it's just that, when you close it you go rite back to the desktop, just like firefox. however if you use, shift enter, your tab will open and when you close it you go back to the previous page. i think shift enter, works that way in all browsers. however, in i e you don't have to use it because when closing the tab you get a prompt whether to close the current tab or all tabs.
