Hey Rod,

Thanks for the info on bitly and tinyurl, and your Skype app.

I must ask, however, why in the world is Outlook configured to not allow links? This can't be the norm. You must never be able to get an authentication link. And it must be an incredible ongoing annoyance. Just curious.

Regards,
Tom

Hi Tom and Carol,

First, the most recent attempt to give me the URL to your app in your DropBox
worked fine, and I did switch the final 0 to 1 to allow immediate download.
Also, I created a shortcut with that URL on my system, and so, if you create
updates, and you place them in that same location, I'll be fine.
As for bitly and tinyurl, these are free web services which have an edit box,
normally the first one on the site, which has the label:
Paste the URL to shorten here
Followed by a button labelled:
Shorten URL
So, once you press the button, the pasted URL will be replaced by a very short
URL, composed of letters and numbers, which you can use anywhere you wish to
substitute for the longer one.
After the URL is shortened, the web page will often have a button named:
copy URL
allowing you to copy the shortened URL to the clipboard for your convenience.
Such shortened URLs are found in Twitter posts and elsewhere since they take up
fewer characters.
The one I use is bitly, and you can find it simply by googling that word since
it is a very famous shortener service, as is tinyurl.
However, since even the URLs still begin with http, they are no good for
sending a URL to someone like me who has an outlook.com email address, of which
Hotmail is one of its domains.
And so, the only way you can send a URL to someone whom you know has an outlook
email address is to change its structure into something which is no longer
recognized as a proper URL.
Putting parentheses around the leading http does the trick.
So, Tom, I have used bitly to shorten the URL to your chrome app, and I changed
the final 0 to 1 within it.
Using my method of enclosing the leading http within parentheses, the URL is:
(http)://bit.ly/2JO8Sch
And so, all one needs to do is remove the parentheses in the above URL, paste
it into the address bar of their browser, press Enter, and the download dialog
box for your app should appear.
Well, that's enough chit-chat about this totally boring and yet important
issue. (smile)
Thanks Tom, once again, for continuing to write apps, and, indeed, I did write
one recently for the Skype for Windows 10 desktop app, if anyone's interested.
My app doesn't do too much except that, without it, as you scroll through a
chat history, the date is not read out as one moves from a block of posts from
one date to those of a different date.
The URL to my public DropBox folder, which contains a number of things,
including the Skype app, is:
(http)://bit.ly/2gX64M0
Remember to remove the parentheses in the above URL, or, again, it won't do
anything but get you mad. (smile)
Keep in mind that the above URL is for a web page which contains all of the
files in my public DropBox folder, where each file is represented by a link.
So, in order to download any of these files, you would focus the link of the
file you wish to download, press Enter, and press Enter once more, whereupon
you will get a drop-down menu with two options.
These options are to download the file, either to your personal DropBox
folder, or directly to your normal browser's download folder.
If the above method for downloading the files doesn't work, you can focus any
of the file links, and press the Applications key or Shift-F10, and scroll down
to the appropriate option for your browser in order to download the file to
your browser's download folder.
Well, I let you all go for now. (smile)

Thanks for reading, and good luck,

Rod

Oops again. If the link works, change the last character, 0, to 1 so it will
download directly instead of trying to sell you Dropbox on a download page.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for troubling to create this app.
Unfortunately, my Outlook mail screen has blocked your URL.
I'm wondering if you could convert it to a bitly or tinyurl to

I appreciate it.

Subject: Here's an app for the Chrome browser.

First, make sure you have the factory settings for Chrome installed.
You can see if they're installed and install them if not by opening
the Window-Eyes control panel, Alt+F File, F factory Settings.
Then when you install the app it will tell you that chrome.set is
being replaced. This is needed to make the app work properly.

Here's what the app does.
1. Speaks alert messages, such as download progress and completion.
When a file is downloaded the message from Chrome is to press
Shift+F6 to go to the download bar.
2. I added Alt+N because it's quicker and the key combination used in
Internet Explorer to go to the notification bar for the same purpose.
All it's doing is inserting Shift+F6. And it's not tied to the
notification. So if you happen to press it without a file downloaded
it will just put you up in the address bar. F6 will put you back in
the main window.
3. Suggestions entered in the address bar as you type will be spoken.
For example, if you type yo, YouTube.com will probably be voiced.
These are just pulled out of your history. When you hear the right
address just press enter.
Unfortunately because you come in on the address bar when Chrome
opens, and it doubles as a Google search field, you'll hear
everything you type repeated as you type it if there are no suggestions.
Obviously there's no way I can tell what you're typing or if it's in
your history.
Also, the suggestions might not be heard when you first open Chrome.
The reason I replaced the set file is so that I could set keyboard
interrupt to program scope. Then I set it to control and alt only
when you're in the address bar and back to whatever you had it set to
when you're not in the address bar. The problem is I have to monitor
for the chrome.set file to be loaded before grabbing it. And the
stars might not line up in time if you open chrome and start typing
immediately. Although you'll probably hear a little snippet of the
suggestion. Then you can use the read line hot key to see what's there.

And finally, I didn't put error reporting in the app because it uses
the GW-Micro App Central server. So if you have any problems you can
email me at tom.kings...@charter.net You can also open the
Window-Eyes control panel, Alt+A Apps, App management, App manager,
select the app, press Alt+H to open Help and Options, then press the
About button. There's a Contact author button in there. And of course
you can post any problems here.
Hope this is helpful.
