I'm only guessing. Have you tried with the file highlighted, not open,
and doing a right click and looking under properties and see if there is
anything there to unprotect or make the file not a a read only? Just a
thought.

as recommended by John. However, Window-eyes won't allow me to check or
uncheck the boxes which seem to have something to do with my problem.
