John, thank you very much for the kind introduction and for the excellent
discussion about how we might all work together and help contribute to the
OpenAerialMap effort.
My team does a lot of work with open standards and open source. We'd like
to help get OpenAerialMap back up and running, with proper precautions in
place to ensure that it remains both a long-term resource and a long-term
capability for further growth hosting open imagery. Working and playing
well with others is typically essential for such work.
I'm hoping we might find time to discuss and document the following while
at Camp Roberts. Most of this is likely well known, but getting it all
straight will likely be helpful (and perhaps essential) if we together
expect to get OpenAerialMap stably back up and running.
- who are stakeholders, both for supplying imagery/technology and using it?
- what are their requirements and goals?
- what are their constraints and assets?
- what range of open-source licenses might be acceptable, and why (or why not)?
- how is the data submitted and vetted?
- how is metadata defined and applied?
- what is the technology on the server side for receiving/querying/serving?
- are there any proprietary impediments in place that open standards/source
might eliminate?
- how does the group discuss issues and reach consensus?
- can we start to get all this clearly described on the wiki?
Whew, this list is pretty long - sorry about that! One step at a time will
be fine. Even so, open questions are also pretty interesting as we consider
next steps forward.
As some folks may know, NPS is both a .edu and a .mil organization.
This lets me wear a university hat or a government hat as appropriate.
Some specific things we'd like to offer:
- site hosting (can be one of several with distributed backups) and reliable
site administration
- high-capacity networking available, connects to CalIT2 http://www.calit2.net
- supercomputer backend available if serious computational processing needed
- have submitted funding request for 10TB of storage + tape backup
- possible connection to NGA if needed - we were recently given ~4TB of
NaturalVue 15m imagery, can ask for other NGA (or NASA or other)
datasets that are available for open redistribution
- interest in applying OpenAerialMap imagery to X3D Earth terrain models,
have already succeeded in using OpenStreetMap for such use
http://x3d-earth.nps.edu and http://www.web3d.org/x3d-earth
- trusted partner supporting the community that governs these assets
Am looking forward to meeting, talking and learning more about successes
to date. Thanks for your efforts and for considering the possibilities.
all the best, Don
